The Prejmer Fortified Church is located in the village of Prejmer, about 15 km northeast of Brașov in the historical region of Transylvania. The church was originally built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order, and later expanded by the Transylvanian Saxon community. Due to its outstanding preservation and historical importance, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania”, inscribed in 1993.

Prejmer is considered one of the strongest fortified churches in Eastern Europe, designed to protect the local population during frequent invasions. The complex is surrounded by massive defensive walls up to 12 meters high and 3–4 meters thick, forming a circular fortress. Inside these walls are over 270 storage rooms and living chambers, arranged on multiple levels, where villagers could shelter during sieges along with their supplies.

Visiting Prejmer

The central church is built in the Gothic style, featuring a simple but imposing structure with a fortified appearance. Inside, visitors can see elements such as the altar, wooden galleries, and traces of medieval decoration. The surrounding courtyard provides access to the many small chambers built into the fortress walls, which were used by individual families for storage and temporary living during attacks.

One of the most notable features of Prejmer is its defensive system, including narrow corridors, hidden stairways, and a fortified gate with protective mechanisms. These elements illustrate how the complex functioned as both a place of worship and a defensive refuge for the entire community.

The site is easily accessible from Brașov, with a travel time of about 20–25 minutes by car. Public buses also run regularly between Brașov and Prejmer, making it convenient for visitors without a car. The church is located in the center of the village and can be reached on foot from local bus stops.

Entrance to the fortified church requires a ticket (approximately €4–€6), and a typical visit lasts about 1–2 hours.
