Westerkerk is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Amsterdam. Constructed between 1620 and 1631 during the Dutch Golden Age, the church was designed by architect Hendrick de Keyser and is considered one of the finest examples of Dutch Renaissance architecture. Its impressive tower, known as the Westertoren, rises approximately 85 meters above the city and remains one of Amsterdam’s tallest and most iconic church towers.

The church is particularly famous for its connection to Anne Frank, who mentioned the sound of the Westerkerk bells several times in her diary while hiding nearby during the Second World War. The church is also traditionally associated with Rembrandt van Rijn, who was buried in the church in 1669, although the exact location of his grave within the building is unknown. Visitors can admire the church’s elegant interior, historic organ, and architectural details that reflect the prosperity of 17th-century Amsterdam.

Entry to the church typically requires a modest admission fee, while tower tours generally cost around €7.50. Westerkerk is located beside the famous Anne Frank House on the Prinsengracht canal. It is within easy walking distance of Dam Square and approximately 15 minutes on foot from Amsterdam Centraal Station.
