The gateway is Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), a major hub about 12 km from the centre and connected by metro, the Cercanias train and airport buses. Madrid is the hub of Spain's superb AVE high-speed rail, reaching Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Malaga in a few hours from Atocha and Chamartin stations. In the city, an extensive and inexpensive metro plus buses cover everything, and the compact centre around the great museums and plazas is very walkable.
