Saalburg is a reconstructed Roman fort located near Bad Homburg in the German state of Hesse. Originally built around the 1st–2nd century AD as part of the Roman frontier system, it formed part of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, the border of the Roman Empire. The reconstruction of Saalburg was initiated in the late 19th century under Emperor Wilhelm II, who took a strong interest in Roman history. Today, Saalburg is an open-air archaeological park and museum, offering visitors a vivid impression of Roman military life in ancient Germany. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire.”
