Roman heritage survives in Trier's Porta Nigra and the Saalburg fort on the Limes. Palaces and gardens include the Würzburg Residence, the New Palace in Potsdam, Augustusburg and Falkenlust in Brühl and the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel. Add Museum Island in Berlin, the Wartburg, Quedlinburg, Maulbronn Monastery, the island of Reichenau, the Wieskirche, the Marksburg on the Middle Rhine and the prehistoric pile dwellings at Unteruhldingen. May to September is the best time to visit.
