Porta Nigra (“Black Gate”) is the best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps and the most famous landmark of Trier, Germany. Constructed around 170 AD, it once formed part of the massive fortifications of the Roman city of Augusta Treverorum and demonstrates the engineering skill and military strength of the Roman Empire. It is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier,” highlighting Trier’s importance as one of the largest Roman cities north of the Alps.
