The Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl are outstanding examples of early Rococo architecture in Germany. Built in the 18th century as residences for the Prince-Archbishops of Cologne, the palaces are celebrated for their elegant design, richly decorated interiors, and formal Baroque gardens. The Grand Staircase of Augustusburg Palace is especially renowned as one of the most important architectural achievements of the Rococo period in Europe. In 1984, the complex was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
