Christiansborg Palace occupies the small islet of Slotsholmen in the centre of Copenhagen, Denmark, a site that has been the city’s centre of power for more than 800 years. It is within easy walking distance of the main pedestrian streets and is well served by city buses; the nearest Metro stations, Gammel Strand and Kongens Nytorv, are both a short walk away. The palace is surrounded by other major sights, including the Thorvaldsen Museum and the National Museum of Denmark, so it fits neatly into a day exploring the old town.

A Palace Like No Other

Christiansborg is unusual in being both a royal palace and the working seat of government. It houses the Danish Parliament (Folketinget), the Supreme Court, and the Prime Minister’s Office, while parts of it are still used by the monarch as the Royal Reception Rooms. The present building is the third on the site, the two earlier palaces having burned down, which is why three crowns adorn the tower to mark each reconstruction. Highlights include the Great Hall with its 17 modern tapestries depicting 1,000 years of Danish history, the Throne Room with its proclamation balcony, the restored royal kitchen, the royal stables, and the medieval ruins of Bishop Absalon’s castle from 1167 hidden beneath the palace.

Tickets, the Tower, and Practical Information

A combined admission ticket to the Royal Reception Rooms, ruins, kitchen, and stables costs around 175 DKK for adults, with free entry for visitors under 18, and buying online saves a small amount per ticket. The Copenhagen Card includes admission, and the Royal Palace Pass combines Christiansborg with Rosenborg and Amalienborg. One of the best free experiences in the city is the climb to the top of the palace tower, the tallest in Copenhagen, which offers sweeping rooftop views at no charge, though queues for it can grow long. A free audio-guide app is available in several languages, including English, German, French, and Russian. Sections may close at short notice when the royal family holds official functions.
