The Royal Palace, or Kungliga slottet, occupies a commanding position at the edge of Gamla Stan, overlooking the water near the Swedish Parliament. The nearest metro station is Gamla Stan on the red and green lines, while Kungsträdgården on the blue line is a 10-minute walk across the Strömbron bridge; from most central hotels it is an easy walk. The palace is open to visitors year-round, although parts may close at short notice when official receptions are taking place.

History and What Makes the Palace Famous

Built in the Italian Baroque style by the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, the present palace rose in the 18th century on the site of the medieval Tre Kronor castle, which was destroyed by fire in 1697. With more than 600 rooms across eleven floors, it ranks among the largest palaces in Europe still in use. It is the official residence and workplace of the King of Sweden, though the royal family actually lives at Drottningholm. The combination of a working royal residence, an official venue, and a cultural monument open to the public makes it unusual among Europe’s palaces, and the daily changing of the guard on the outer courtyard, around midday, is a popular free spectacle.

What to See and Ticket Information

A single ticket gives access to several attractions within the palace: the lavish Royal Apartments, the Treasury in the cellar vaults with the Swedish crown jewels and regalia, and the Tre Kronor Museum, which tells the story of the earlier medieval castle. Adult admission is in the region of 200 SEK, with reduced prices for children and teenagers and free entry for the youngest, and the palace is included in the Go City Stockholm Pass. Opening hours are typically 10:00–16:00 from Tuesday to Sunday between October and April, and daily 10:00–17:00 from May to September. Tickets can be bought online or at the entrances, and audio guides are available.
