Kjeragbolten 巨石，吕瑟峡湾，挪威

Kjeragbolten is a rounded boulder of about five cubic metres jammed into a crevice on the Kjerag mountain, suspended some 984 metres directly above the Lysefjord. It lies on the southern side of the fjord in Sandnes municipality, in the Ryfylke region of Rogaland county, southwestern Norway. The hike starts from the Øygardstøl car park (marked as “Kjerag parking” on maps), reached by driving up 27 hairpin bends from the small village of Lysebotn at the innermost end of the fjord. Most visitors base themselves in Stavanger, around a 2.5-hour, 140-kilometre drive away via the E39 and the mountain road through Sirdal, which needs no ferry. Alternatively, you can take the car ferry from the Stavanger area to Lysebotn and continue up to the trailhead, or use the summer bus service from Stavanger, which typically runs daily in July and August and costs roughly 600–750 NOK return.

What Makes Kjeragbolten Famous

The boulder was wedged in place by a retreating glacier at the end of the last Ice Age, and today it draws around 70,000 hikers a year, second in popularity only to nearby Preikestolen. Its fame rests on a single, nerve-testing act: stepping across a small gap onto the rock to stand with nothing but nearly a kilometre of air and the fjord far below. There are no railings or barriers, and the surrounding Kjerag plateau is also a world-renowned site for BASE jumping and rock climbing, so on a clear summer day you may see jumpers launching from the cliffs. Even those who choose not to step onto the boulder find the panorama over the 42-kilometre Lysefjord unforgettable, and there is no shame in admiring it from the cliff edge.

The Hike and Practical Information

The trail is free to walk, with costs limited to parking (300 NOK per vehicle at Øygardstøl, which has toilets and a café), the ferry, or the bus. It is a demanding mountain hike of roughly 11 kilometres round trip, with about 800 metres of elevation gain and a typical time of six to ten hours. The route crosses steep granite slabs and includes three chain-assisted climbs where you pull yourself up and lower yourself down using fixed cables, so a good level of fitness, sturdy hiking boots, and a head for exposure are essential; the path has been improved in recent years with stone steps by Nepalese Sherpas. Kjeragbolten is a strictly seasonal destination: the access road is closed by snow from around November until mid-May, and the reliable window runs from roughly June to September.

Safety and Tips

Weather is the single most important factor, and it can differ dramatically between Stavanger and the exposed plateau, which may be 10–15°C colder. The rock and the boulder itself become extremely slippery when wet, and every year hikers who set out in rain or fog have to be rescued after losing their way, so the golden rule is not to attempt the hike in rain, fog, or strong wind. Start early, ideally arriving at the car park before 8 a.m., both to have enough daylight and to reach the boulder before the queues build up, as more than 30 people can be waiting for a photo by mid-morning in peak season. Bring plenty of food and water, warm and waterproof layers, and check the mountain forecast before setting out, remembering that phone coverage is patchy along parts of the trail.
