Tangermünde is a jewel of North German Brick Gothic, a small walled town perched above the River Elbe at its confluence with the Tanger in the Altmark region of Saxony-Anhalt. Once a prosperous member of the Hanseatic League and, for a time, a favourite residence of Emperor Charles IV, it enjoyed a golden age in the 14th and 15th centuries that left it with an extraordinary ensemble of red-brick buildings — churches, gates, a soaring town hall and a hilltop castle — much of it still enclosed by a near-complete medieval wall. Well off the main tourist trails, the town remains wonderfully atmospheric, its cobbled lanes lined with half-timbered houses rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1617, the event that inspired the tragic legend of Grete Minde, later retold by the novelist Theodor Fontane.

The town’s showpiece is the Town Hall (Rathaus), one of the finest secular works of North German Brick Gothic, its lace-like showpiece gable attributed to the master builder Hinrich Brunsberg around 1430. Almost the entire circuit of the town wall survives, rising 10 to 15 metres in brick and pierced by splendid gates; the grandest is the Neustadt Gate (Neustädter Tor), a double gateway that combines a square 13th-century tower with an elegant round tower of 1450. Rising over the rooftops is the brick-Gothic Church of St Stephen, celebrated for its Baroque organ built by Hans Scherer. At the northern edge of town stands Tangermünde Castle, which Emperor Charles IV had rebuilt as an imperial palace (Kaiserpfalz) after he acquired Brandenburg in 1373; today its walls, towers and terraces command wide views over the Elbe, and part of the complex houses a hotel and restaurant. It is well worth walking down through the Elbe Gate to the riverbank to see just how dramatically the old town sits on its bluff.

Tangermünde lies in the Altmark in the north of Saxony-Anhalt, on the western bank of the Elbe. It has its own railway station at the end of a short branch line from Stendal, which sits on the main line between Berlin and Hanover, so the town can be reached by regional train in around two to three hours from Berlin with one change; drivers arrive via Stendal. The compact old town is easily explored on foot, with parking outside the walls. Wandering the lanes, following the town wall and admiring the gates and castle grounds are free at any time, while the church tower, museums and guided tours are ticketed and keep seasonal hours. With few crowds and plenty of small cafés and guesthouses, Tangermünde makes a rewarding and peaceful stop, especially for anyone following the Elbe Cycle Route or the Route of Brick Gothic.
