The Zwinger, Dresden

The Zwinger is the masterpiece of Dresden Baroque and one of the most beautiful palace complexes in Germany — not a residence but a vast open courtyard framed by ornate pavilions, arched galleries and balustraded terraces, built purely for splendour. It was created between 1710 and 1728 for Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, to designs by the court architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann working with the sculptor Balthasar Permoser, as an orangery and a grand arena for the festivities of his glittering court. Destroyed in the bombing of Dresden in 1945 and painstakingly rebuilt, the Zwinger today combines its dazzling architecture with some of the finest museums in the country, all gathered around a formal garden at the heart of the old town.

The architecture itself is the first delight: stroll the galleries and climb the terraces to take in the exuberant sculpture, and seek out the three great set-pieces — the Crown Gate (Kronentor), topped by a gilded Polish crown; the sumptuously carved Wall Pavilion (Wallpavillon), the most ornate corner of the whole complex; and the Nymphs’ Bath (Nymphenbad), a hidden Baroque fountain court alive with statues of nymphs and tritons. A nearby pavilion carries a carillon of Meissen porcelain bells that chimes through the day. The Zwinger’s wings and the adjoining Semper Gallery house a trio of world-class collections: the Old Masters Picture Gallery, whose star is Raphael’s Sistine Madonna, along with works by Vermeer, Rembrandt and Titian; the Porcelain Collection, one of the largest of its kind, rich in Meissen and East Asian pieces; and the Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments, with its historic globes, clocks and scientific instruments.

The Zwinger stands in the heart of Dresden’s Baroque old town, a few steps from the Semperoper opera house and the Theaterplatz on the bank of the Elbe. Dresden is well connected by fast trains from Berlin, Leipzig and Prague, and from the main station it is a short tram ride or a walk of around twenty minutes to the old town; the nearest tram stops are at Postplatz and Theaterplatz. The Zwinger’s courtyard and gardens are freely open to walk through during the day, while each of the museums charges its own admission and most are closed on Mondays. Allow at least half a day to combine the architecture with one or two of the collections, and consider pairing a visit with the neighbouring Royal Palace, the Frauenkirche and a stroll along the Elbe terraces.
