Wawel Castle is located on Wawel Hill, on the banks of the Vistula River in the center of Krakow. For many centuries, it served as the residence of Polish kings. Today, it remains one of the city’s most important historical and cultural landmarks.

Tourist visits to Krakow often begin at Wawel Castle. Strictly speaking, it is not just a castle, but a large royal complex that includes several buildings of historical significance. All structures are situated atop Wawel Hill, which is 228 meters high. The complex includes:

The Royal Castle
The Cathedral of Saints Stanislaus and Wenceslas
Fortifications (walls, towers, gates)
Churches, chapels, and administrative buildings
A beautiful park

Entrance to the castle grounds is free (2024). For a separate fee, visitors can see the tombs of the Polish kings beneath the cathedral and climb the bell tower for panoramic views of Krakow. A guided tour is available for an additional fee of 20 PLN (2024).

Inside the castle, tourists can explore the Royal Rooms, the Treasury of the Polish Kings, the Armory, and the “Lost Wawel” exhibition. The interiors display historic furniture, paintings, wallpapers, and decorative elements. The armory includes medieval armor, swords, and other weaponry. Tickets for museum tours cost around 19 euros (2020), while entry to the inner courtyard is free.

On the grounds, you can also see a sculpture of Pope John Paul II, who served as the bishop of Wawel before becoming pope, and a fire-breathing dragon sculpture near the castle caves, which occasionally breathes fire. Visitors can also access the Wawel caves from within the castle.

From the other side of the complex, you can descend to Krakow’s Old Town and continue your sightseeing. Nearby are the historic Kazimierz district and the Jewish Quarter, making Wawel Castle an ideal starting point for exploring the city.
