Carnival Highlights

Giant lanterns, sometimes several meters high, are carried through the streets.
After the parade, spectators head to local cafes and bars to enjoy traditional carnival foods like quiche, carnival soup, and cookies.

Monday Afternoon – Festive Procession:

Clique members ride on decorated platforms (converted vehicles such as vans or tractors).
Confetti, sweets, toys, and oranges are thrown at the crowds.
Musicians and costumed participants march alongside the platforms, creating a lively atmosphere.

Tuesday – Children and Music:

Activities focus on children, including clowns and kids in costumes.
Evening features the Guggenmusik competition, with loud, slightly off-key carnival music performed by groups of musicians.

Wednesday – Farewell:

Participants parade again, lanterns lit for the last time.
On Thursday night, the carnival concludes at the original starting point, with lights going out and music stopping, signaling the end of the celebration.

While Basel hosts the largest Fasnacht in Switzerland, smaller versions also take place in Zurich and Lucerne.
