Sechseläuten (also spelled Sächsilüüte) is a traditional spring festival in Zurich, Switzerland, celebrating the end of winter. The name “Sechseläuten” translates as “Six Bells,” referring to the six o’clock ringing of the bells of Grossmünster Cathedral, which marks the start of the festival’s main event. The holiday typically takes place on the third Sunday of April, though the date can shift if it coincides with Easter or Easter Monday.

The centerpiece of Sechseläuten is the burning of the Böögg, a stuffed snowman that symbolizes winter. The event begins with a colorful parade of guilds of artisans—bakers, tinsmiths, winemakers, and others—who dress in 19th-century historical costumes and proceed on foot, horseback, or festive floats along Bahnhofstrasse and Limmatquai towards Sechseläutenplatz, a square near the Zurich Opera House and Lake Zurich. The parade is accompanied by music performed by brass bands.

On Sechseläutenplatz, a massive bonfire made of brushwood and branches is prepared in advance, with the Böögg positioned at the top of a pole. At 18:00, the bells ring six times, signaling the ignition of the fire. Fireworks are embedded in the snowman, particularly in its head, and when the flames reach it, the head explodes. Local folklore holds that the speed at which the Böögg’s head explodes predicts the summer’s weather: a quick explosion foretells a warm summer, while a slow burn indicates a cooler, wetter season. The average time for the Böögg’s head to explode is 10–15 minutes, though records have ranged from as fast as 4 minutes to over an hour under adverse conditions, as occurred in 2023 due to heavy rain.
