Hundertwasser House (German: Hundertwasserhaus) in Vienna, Austria, is one of the city’s most unusual and visited attractions, rivaling the popularity of its cathedrals and palaces. This colorful and eccentric apartment building is located at Kegelgasse 36–38, just a short walk from Rochusgasse metro station and about half an hour from the city center.

The building is named after the Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, although the project was carried out in collaboration with architect Josef Krawina. Construction was completed in 1985.

Architectural Features

Hundertwasser House stands out for its highly original design that defies conventional architectural rules:

• Irregular shapes and colors – bright facades decorated with mosaics, ceramics, and glass elements.
• Uneven floors – Hundertwasser disliked straight lines and flat surfaces, calling them “godless,” so the floors are slightly wavy.
• Asymmetrical windows – each window looks different in size and shape, giving the building a whimsical character.
• Green roof and terraces – trees, shrubs, and even small gardens grow directly on the building.

The architect believed that nature should be integrated into human life and architecture, so the greenery is not decorative but part of the building’s concept.

Accessibility

Since the house is residential, tours of the interior are not available to the public. Visitors can admire the building only from the outside, making it one of the most photographed sites in Vienna.

Opposite the building stands Hundertwasser Village – a small shopping center designed in the same artistic style, featuring souvenir shops, cafés, and even a uniquely designed public restroom.

Just 400 meters away, at Untere Weißgerberstraße 13, is another work of Hundertwasser – the KunstHausWien (Art House Vienna). This gallery and museum is dedicated to his art and ecological philosophy and is less crowded than the famous residential building.
