Praia da Marinha is one of the most famous beaches in Portugal. It lies on the southern coast of the Algarve, near the village of Caramujeira in the municipality of Lagoa, and is known for its golden limestone cliffs, sea stacks and clear turquoise water. The Michelin Guide has named it one of the ten most beautiful beaches in Europe and one of the hundred most beautiful in the world.
Location and Landscape
The beach lies at the foot of steep cliffs that erosion has shaped over thousands of years into arches, caves and sea stacks. The best-known sight is a double arch that, seen from the cliff path above the beach at the right angle, forms a heart shape. From the clifftop there are wide views along the coast, which makes it a favourite spot for photographers.
How to Get There
- By car: Praia da Marinha is easy to reach by car: about 10 minutes from Lagoa, 15 minutes from Carvoeiro and 45 minutes from Faro. There is a free car park at the top of the cliffs, but it fills up quickly in summer.
- By public transport: Bus connections are limited, so most visitors drive or take a taxi.
- On foot: The beach is one end of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos), a scenic path of about 6 km along the cliffs to Praia de Vale Centeanes.
- From the car park: A steep path with steps leads down to the beach, which may be difficult for people with limited mobility.
Water Temperature and Swimming
The water at Praia da Marinha is exceptionally clear and ideal for swimming and snorkelling. As this is the Atlantic, however, it stays cool even in summer.
- In summer and early autumn the water is usually around 18–21 °C.
- In winter it drops to about 15–16 °C.
The sea is usually calm, and lifeguards are on duty in the summer season.
Entrance Fee and Facilities
Praia da Marinha is a public beach and entry is free. There are toilets and, in season, a small beach café with snacks and drinks. Sun loungers and umbrellas are limited, so bring your own shade if you plan to stay all day. There are no large hotels or shops right next to the beach, which helps it keep its natural feel.
Best Time to Visit
The best months to visit are May, June and September, when the weather is warm, the sea is fairly calm and there are fewer visitors than in midsummer. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for photos, when the low sun lights up the cliffs.
