Elafonisi beach, Crete, Greece

Elafonisi Beach is one of the most famous and picturesque beaches in Greece. It lies on the south-western tip of Crete, about 75 kilometres from Chania, and is known for its pink-tinged sand, shallow turquoise water and unspoilt nature. Often described as a tropical paradise in the Mediterranean, it draws thousands of visitors every summer.

Overview and Landscape

Elafonisi is actually a small island separated from the Cretan mainland by a shallow lagoon. The water is so shallow that you can usually wade across the sandbar to the island in knee-deep water. The sand owes its pink colour to the tiny red shells of foraminifera, microscopic sea creatures, mixed with fragments of other shells. The calm, shallow water makes it ideal for families with children, swimmers and snorkellers.

The area is protected as part of the Natura 2000 network to preserve its fragile dunes and plants. Despite its popularity, there are no large resorts on the beach itself.

How to Get There

Elafonisi can be reached by car, bus or organised tour from western Crete.

  • By car: The drive from Chania takes about 1 hour 30 minutes on a scenic, winding mountain road. There is a large paid car park next to the beach, which fills up by mid-morning in July and August.
  • By bus: In summer a KTEL bus runs from Chania to Elafonisi once a day; the trip takes about 2 hours.
  • By tour: Many hotels and travel agencies in Crete offer organised day trips, often combined with a stop at the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery nearby.

Water Temperature and Swimming

The sea around Elafonisi is warm and shallow, making it one of the most comfortable swimming spots in Crete.

  • From July to September the water is usually 24–28 °C.
  • In June and October it is around 21–25 °C, still pleasant for swimming.

Because the lagoon is shallow and sheltered, it is safe and pleasant for children and beginners, and the clear water is ideal for snorkelling.

Entrance Fee and Facilities

Access to Elafonisi Beach is free; only the car park charges a fee.

Facilities include:

  • Sunbeds and umbrellas for rent (about €15 per set).
  • A few beach kiosks and canteens offering drinks, snacks, and light meals.
  • Public toilets and showers near the parking area.

Despite these conveniences, much of the beach remains natural and unspoiled, with plenty of space for those who prefer to lay their towels directly on the sand.

Safety and Environmental Rules

Elafonisi is a protected nature reserve, so please respect the environment. Taking sand or shells is strictly prohibited, as it damages the fragile ecosystem that gives the beach its famous pink colour. Lifeguards are on duty in summer, and swimming is generally safe thanks to the gentle waves and shallow water.
