Knossos Palace is the largest and most important Bronze Age archaeological site on the island of Crete. Located near Heraklion, the palace was the political and cultural center of the Minoan civilization, Europe’s earliest advanced civilization, which flourished more than 3,500 years ago. The site is closely connected with ancient Greek mythology, especially the legend of King Minos, the Labyrinth, and the Minotaur.
Originally built around 1900 BC and later rebuilt after earthquakes, Knossos became a vast complex containing royal chambers, ceremonial halls, workshops, storage rooms, staircases, and courtyards. Archaeologists discovered advanced engineering features such as drainage systems, running water, and multi-story buildings that were highly sophisticated for their time. The palace is also famous for reconstructed frescoes depicting dolphins, bull-leaping ceremonies, and scenes of Minoan daily life.
Visitor Information
Knossos Palace remains one of Greece’s most visited archaeological attractions and offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the origins of European civilization. Some parts of the site were reconstructed in the early 20th century by archaeologist Arthur Evans, creating ongoing debates among historians about restoration methods, but also helping tourists better visualize the original appearance of the palace.
Entrance tickets generally cost around €15–€20 for adults, with combination tickets often available for the nearby Heraklion Archaeological Museum, where many original artifacts and frescoes from Knossos are displayed. Summer temperatures at the archaeological site can become very hot, so morning visits are strongly recommended along with water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes.
Knossos Palace is located approximately 5 kilometers south of Heraklion and can easily be reached by local bus (Bus Nr. 2 “Knossos” from Herakleion), taxi, rental car, or organized tour. Travelers arriving at Heraklion International Airport can reach the site in about 20–30 minutes. Many tourists combine Knossos with visits to Heraklion’s museums, harbor, and old Venetian fortifications during a full-day exploration of Crete.
