Greece is where much of European history began, and this page brings together nine of its most famous sites. In Athens, the Acropolis crowns the city, while Delphi and Olympia were the great sanctuaries of the ancient world. On Crete, Knossos was the centre of Minoan civilisation. The monasteries of Meteora stand on towering rock pillars, and Mount Athos is a monastic community on its own peninsula. The medieval city of Rhodes and the Old Town of Corfu show later chapters of Greek history, and Oia on Santorini is famous for its sunsets over the caldera. April–May and September–October are the most pleasant months.
