Alcázar of Segovia castle, Spain

The Alcázar of Segovia is one of Spain’s most distinctive and historically significant castles, located in the city of Segovia, in the region of Castile and León. Rising majestically above the confluence of the Eresma and Clamores rivers, the castle is known for its unique ship-like shape and fairy-tale appearance. It has served various purposes throughout history, including as a fortress, royal palace, prison, military academy, and now a museum.

History and Significance

The origins of the Alcázar of Segovia date back to the early 12th century, though evidence suggests that earlier Roman and Moorish fortifications once stood on the site. The castle gained prominence during the reign of Alfonso VIII in the 12th and 13th centuries, who transformed it into a royal residence. Over time, it became a favored home of Castilian monarchs, most notably Queen Isabella I, who was proclaimed Queen of Castile in Segovia in 1474.

In 1764 King Charles III founded the Royal College of Artillery in the Alcázar, and today it also houses the General Military Archive. A major fire in 1862 caused significant damage to the structure, but careful restoration in the late 19th century returned it to its former grandeur.

Architecture

The Alcázar’s design combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Mudéjar styles, reflecting its long and varied history. Its most recognizable feature is its pointed slate-covered towers and conical turrets, which are often said to have inspired the design of Disney’s Cinderella Castle.

The castle’s layout includes two main courtyards, the Tower of John II (Torre de Juan II), and an elegant series of halls and chambers.

The Tower of John II offers panoramic views of the city of Segovia, its aqueduct, and the surrounding countryside.

Visiting the Alcázar

The Alcázar of Segovia is open every day except 25 December and a few other holidays, and is run as a museum. Visitors can explore the restored royal rooms, such as the Throne Room and the Hall of the Kings, see the artillery museum and climb the 152 steps of the Tower of John II.

Opening hours:
From April to October the Alcázar is open from 10:00 to 19:30, and from November to March from 10:00 to 18:00. Ticket sales close 30 minutes before closing time.

Admission fees:
In 2026 the palace and museum ticket costs €7 (reduced €5), and the full ticket including the Tower of John II costs €10 (reduced €8). Children under 6 enter free, and EU citizens can visit the palace and museum free on Tuesdays from 14:00 to 16:00, with tickets from the box office only. Booking ahead is recommended at weekends.

How to Get There

By train:
Avant and AVE high-speed trains link Madrid Chamartín with Segovia-Guiomar station in about 30 minutes. From Guiomar, city bus line 11 runs to the Aqueduct in about 15 minutes, and from there it is a 20-minute walk through the old town to the Alcázar.

By car:
Segovia is about 90 km northwest of Madrid, around 1 hour 15 minutes by car via the AP-6 and AP-61 toll motorways. Parking in the old town is limited, so it is easier to use the car parks outside the walls and walk up.

By bus or tour:
Regular intercity buses run from Madrid’s Moncloa station to Segovia in about 1 hour 15 minutes, and organized day tours often include guided visits to the Alcázar, the Roman aqueduct and Segovia Cathedral.

What Makes It Famous

The Alcázar of Segovia is celebrated for its striking fairy-tale silhouette and its deep connection to Spanish royal and military history. It is one of the most picturesque castles in Europe, and together with the old town and the Roman aqueduct it has been part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
