Calcio Storico Fiorentino, Florence, Italy

Calcio Storico Fiorentino is a traditional full-contact ball game played annually in the city of Florence, Italy. Combining elements of football, rugby, and martial arts, it is regarded as one of Europe’s oldest and most physically intense sporting spectacles. Today, it is celebrated not only as a competition but also as a cultural event that reflects the medieval identity and civic pride of Florence.

The origins of Calcio Storico date back to the Middle Ages, with its most documented form emerging during the Renaissance, when the game was popular among Florentine aristocrats. The most famous match was played on 17 February 1530, during the siege of Florence by imperial troops, as an act of defiance. The game faded in the 18th century and was revived in 1930.

When and Where It Takes Place

Calcio Storico Fiorentino takes place every June in the Piazza Santa Croce, a historic square located in the heart of Florence, Tuscany. The square is transformed into a sandy arena specifically built for the games.

The main events include:

  • Three matches: two semifinals and one final.
  • The final match is traditionally played on June 24, the feast day of Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of Florence.

The semifinals are played on a weekend in mid-June. Each match is preceded by a historical parade of several hundred people in Renaissance costume, with drummers, flag-wavers and soldiers, from the city center to Santa Croce. Seats on the temporary stands around the arena are ticketed and sell out quickly.

Teams and Rules

Four teams represent the historic quarters of the city: the Azzurri of Santa Croce, the Bianchi of Santo Spirito, the Rossi of Santa Maria Novella and the Verdi of San Giovanni. Each side has 27 players and a match lasts 50 minutes. Points, called cacce, are scored by throwing the ball into the net along the opponents’ end of the field, while a shot that misses gives half a point to the other side. Wrestling and punching are allowed, but kicks to the head and two-on-one fights are forbidden.
