Florence climate and the best season to visit
Florence lies in a basin surrounded by hills, which traps the heat in summer and the damp chill in winter. July and August reach 32 °C, often more, with few breezes, while December and January bring 11–12 °C by day and frosty nights. Autumn is the wettest season: from October to December it rains on 12–13 days a month.
Spring, autumn and festivals
April, May and late September to October are the most comfortable, with 19–26 °C for climbing Brunelleschi’s dome or walking across the Ponte Vecchio at sunset. Easter Sunday brings the Scoppio del Carro in front of the cathedral, and in June the Calcio Storico, a rough historic football tournament, is played in Piazza Santa Croce.
Museums for rain and heat
Few cities offer as much art under one roof. On wet or scorching days, the Uffizi, the Accademia with Michelangelo’s David, the Palazzo Pitti and the Basilica of Santa Croce can fill several days; book Uffizi and Accademia tickets ahead to avoid long queues outside.
