The Basilica of Santa Croce (Basilica di Santa Croce, “Basilica of the Holy Cross”) is the principal Franciscan church in Florence, Italy, and the largest Franciscan church in the world. It is renowned for its distinctive polychrome façade and its association with some of the most prominent figures of Italian history and culture.
History
Construction of Santa Croce began in 1294, dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order. The main structure was completed in 1385, though additions and artistic embellishments continued during the Renaissance. Renowned masters such as Giotto, Donatello, and Bernardo Rossellino contributed frescoes and sculptures. One of the basilica’s most celebrated spaces, the Pazzi Chapel, was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi in the 15th century.
The neo-Gothic façade, faced with white, green, and red marble, was added in the 19th century. At that time, funding allowed for the decoration of the front façade only, leaving the side and rear elevations relatively plain.
Architecture and Layout
Located on Piazza Santa Croce, just a short walk from Piazza della Signoria, the church presents a lighter and more graceful appearance than Florence’s Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. The spacious square enhances the visibility of its façade, making it a popular subject for photography.
Interior and Monuments
Santa Croce is sometimes called the “Temple of the Italian Glories” because of the notable individuals buried there. The basilica contains approximately 300 tombs, including those of:
- Dante Alighieri (cenotaph; his remains are in Ravenna)
- Galileo Galilei (astronomer)
- Niccolò Machiavelli (philosopher and statesman)
- Gioachino Rossini (composer)
- Other cultural and political figures of Italy.
Many of the tombs are adorned with sculptural monuments, often depicting the deceased in repose.
