Manneken Pis is a historic fountain statue located in the center of Brussels, Belgium. Created in bronze, it represents a small boy standing over a basin and has become an enduring symbol of the city’s playful and unconventional character. Although the statue is only 55.5 cm tall, it holds great cultural importance and is one of the most visited attractions in Brussels.
A fountain figure is recorded on this street corner as early as the 15th century, and the present bronze was made by the sculptor Jérôme Duquesnoy the Elder and put in place in 1619. Over the centuries, the statue has been damaged, stolen, replaced, and restored multiple times, reflecting the turbulent history of the city. Since 1965 a replica has stood at the fountain, while the original is kept in the Brussels City Museum in the Maison du Roi on the Grand-Place.
Numerous legends surround Manneken Pis, explaining its meaning and origin. One popular story tells of a young boy who saved the city by extinguishing a burning fuse with his urine, while another describes him as the son of a noble family who was found in the same position after being lost. These stories contribute to the statue’s mythical status and charm.
A distinctive tradition associated with Manneken Pis is its extensive wardrobe of around 1,000 costumes, from national and folk outfits to uniforms and humorous designs. On holidays and special occasions the statue is dressed in themed clothing, and since 2017 the costumes have been displayed in the GardeRobe MannekenPis museum a few steps away on the same street.
Today, Manneken Pis remains a beloved cultural icon and a popular meeting point for tourists exploring Brussels’ historic center. It embodies the city’s sense of irony, resilience, and celebration of everyday life, making it an essential stop for visitors discovering Belgian culture.
