Hallstatt is a small lakeside village located in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, between steep Alpine mountains and Lake Hallstatt. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful villages in Europe, known for its wooden houses, narrow streets, and dramatic natural setting. Since 1997, Hallstatt has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Hallstatt–Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape”, recognized for its long history, traditional settlement, and outstanding alpine scenery.
Why Hallstatt is famous
Hallstatt is famous for its postcard-like views that combine calm lake water, sharp mountain slopes, and historic architecture. The most iconic viewpoint is from the lakeside promenade, where colorful houses are reflected in the water with the Dachstein mountains rising behind them. Another popular viewpoint is the Skywalk “World Heritage View”, a platform about 350 meters above the village next to the upper station of the Salzberg funicular, with wide panoramic views over the lake and valley. Walking paths around the village, boat views from the lake, and viewpoints above the old town all provide different perspectives, making Hallstatt especially attractive at sunrise and in the early morning when the village is quieter.
UNESCO World Heritage status
Hallstatt’s inclusion on the UNESCO list highlights its importance as one of the oldest known salt-mining regions in the world: salt has been mined in the mountain above the village for around 7,000 years, and the Iron Age Hallstatt culture is named after the finds from its prehistoric burial ground. The site is valued not only for its natural beauty, but also for how the village, landscape, and traditional way of life have developed together in a limited alpine space.
Visiting and prices
The village itself is free to visit. The Salzberg funicular up to the Skywalk costs €29 return for adults and €14 for children aged 4 to 15, and a guided tour of the Salzwelten salt mine including the funicular costs €49 (children €23); in 2026, the mine is open until 6 January 2027. Hallstatt is small and gets very crowded during the day in summer, so arriving early in the morning or staying overnight is the best way to enjoy it.
How to get there
Hallstatt railway station lies on the opposite shore of the lake; a small ferry meets the trains and crosses to the village in about 10 minutes. Buses also run from Bad Ischl. The village center is closed to traffic, so drivers have to leave their cars in the car parks at the edge of the village.
