Rabbit Beach on Lampedusa: white sand and clear turquoise water in a nature reserve, with free but booked access in summer to protect nesting turtles.

Spiaggia dei Conigli beach, Lampedusa, Italy

Spiaggia dei Conigli, also known internationally as Rabbit Beach, is located on the island of Lampedusa in the southern part of the Mediterranean Sea. The beach lies on the southwestern coast of the island and faces the small rocky Isola dei Conigli (Rabbit Island), which gives the beach its name. Lampedusa belongs to the Pelagie Islands and is geographically closer to North Africa than to mainland Italy. Thanks to its remote location and protected environment, Spiaggia dei Conigli is often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

The Beach and the Sea

Spiaggia dei Conigli is famous for its fine white sand and incredibly clear turquoise water. The beach sits in a small protected bay surrounded by low rocky hills and Mediterranean vegetation, creating a natural amphitheater facing the sea. The water here is exceptionally transparent, often resembling the colors of tropical seas. The seabed slopes very gently, allowing visitors to walk far into the water while enjoying calm and warm conditions for swimming. The beach is also an important nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles, which come here during the summer months to lay their eggs.

Facilities and Visitor Access

Spiaggia dei Conigli lies within the Isola di Lampedusa nature reserve, managed by Legambiente, so infrastructure is intentionally limited in order to preserve the natural environment. From the car park a path of about 800 m leads down to the beach (around 15–20 minutes on foot). There are no toilets or services on the sand, so bring water and shade.

In summer (roughly mid-June to mid-October) entry is free but limited: you book a morning (8:30–13:30) or afternoon (14:30–19:30) slot online at prenotazionespiaggiaconigli.it, with up to 550 people per slot, and must pass the reserve gate by 9:30 or 15:30. The beach is closed at night to protect the nesting turtles.
