The Madeira Carnival is the island’s best-known festival and fills the capital, Funchal, with music and colour every year before Lent. Inspired by the carnival of Rio de Janeiro, it brings samba schools, dancers, musicians and decorated floats onto the streets of the city centre. In 2027 the official carnival programme runs from 3 to 14 February.
The highlight is the Allegoric Parade (Cortejo Alegórico), held in central Funchal on the evenings of 5 and 6 February 2027, when thousands of dancers in costumes of feathers, sequins and lights parade with themed floats. On Carnival Tuesday, 9 February, the satirical Trapalhão Parade lets locals of all ages poke fun at politics and current events in home-made costumes, and on the Thursday before Carnival around a thousand children parade along Avenida Arriaga. During carnival week there are also concerts, street parties and food stalls in the squares and along the waterfront.
Visitor Information and Travel Tips
The parades follow the seafront avenues of Funchal, and the whole historic centre joins the party, with themed events in hotels, restaurants and bars. The evening parades with illuminated floats are the best time for photographs; arrive early to get a good spot along the route.
The street parades and most carnival events are free to watch. Carnival week is one of the busiest times of the year in Madeira, so flights and hotels get more expensive and should be booked several months ahead.
Madeira’s Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport is about 20–30 minutes by taxi from central Funchal, and the Aerobus shuttle connects it with the city. There are direct flights from Lisbon, Porto and many European cities. Funchal’s compact centre is easy to explore on foot, and the cable car up to Monte, buses and tours lead to the rest of the island.
