Festa da Flor / Madeira Flower Festival, Funchal, Portugal

The Madeira Flower Festival (Festa da Flor) is one of the most celebrated annual events in Madeira, Portugal, held in spring, from late April through May, when the island is in full bloom. Centered in the capital, Funchal, the festival showcases the region’s rich floral diversity and mild climate. Originally created to celebrate the arrival of spring, it has evolved into a major cultural attraction, drawing visitors from across Europe and beyond.

The festival grew out of a rose show first held at the Ateneu Comercial do Funchal in 1954, which became the Festa da Flor a year later; since 1979 it has been organised by the regional tourism authority in its current form. It celebrates the arrival of spring and Madeira’s reputation as a “floating garden” with a mild climate and abundant flora. Each year, the event attracts tens of thousands of visitors, drawn by its famous floral carpets, exhibitions, and artistic installations. One of the highlights is the “Wall of Hope” (Muro da Esperança) ceremony, where children place flowers as a symbol of peace, as well as the grand allegorical parade featuring floats decorated entirely with fresh flowers and accompanied by music and dance.

Madeira Flower Festival 2027

The Madeira Flower Festival lasts for about a month. In 2026 it ran from 30 April to 31 May, with two allegorical parades on 3 and 17 May. The 2027 festival is scheduled from 29 April to 30 May, with the Allegorical Flower Parade on Sundays 2 and 16 May and the Wall of Hope on the Saturday morning before the first parade, according to the official calendar of the regional tourism board.

During the festival, the streets of Funchal are transformed into colorful displays of flowers, with intricate floral carpets, decorative arches, and themed installations spread throughout the city center. Visitors can stroll along Avenida Arriaga and the surrounding streets, where flower carpets, markets and exhibitions present a wide variety of local plants, handmade crafts, and traditional products. The overall atmosphere is calm yet festive, combining natural beauty with local traditions.

One of the central events of the festival is the Grand Allegorical Flower Parade, featuring elaborately decorated floats covered in thousands of fresh flowers. Participants dressed in vibrant, floral-themed costumes dance through the streets, accompanied by music and choreographed performances. Another symbolic moment is the “Wall of Hope” ceremony, where children place flowers to promote peace and unity.

Prices and Opening Hours

Most outdoor events of the Madeira Flower Festival are free of charge, including street decorations, exhibitions, and public performances.
