Ancient Olympia is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games. Located in the western Peloponnese region, Olympia was the religious and athletic center of ancient Greece for more than a thousand years.
Every four years, athletes from across the Greek world gathered here to compete in honor of Zeus. Today, Olympia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the country’s most visited archaeological destinations. The site is especially popular among visitors interested in sports history, classical Greece, and the origins of the Olympic tradition.
What Tourists Usually Visit
The main attraction is the ancient Olympic stadium, where visitors can still walk onto the original running track used thousands of years ago. Tourists also explore:
- the ruins of the Temple of Zeus,
- ancient training areas and gymnasiums,
- the workshop of Phidias,
- ceremonial buildings,
- and the Archaeological Museum of Olympia.
The museum contains important statues, sculptures, and artifacts from the sanctuary, including remains connected to the giant Statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Tours, Tickets, and How to Get There
Ancient Olympia is located in the Peloponnese region, approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours by car from Athens. By bus, you can reach Olympia from Athens via Pyrgos, the capital of the region. If traveling by boat, the nearests ports are Katakolo (34km), where cruise ships arrive. Many tourists visit Olympia as part of multi-day tours around the Peloponnese, while cruise ship excursions from western Greek ports are also common.
Guided tours usually cost between €70 and €150 depending on transportation and itinerary. Entrance tickets to the archaeological site and museum are typically around €10–20. Most visitors spend several hours exploring both the ruins and museum together.
The area is surrounded by green hills and forests, creating a calmer and more natural atmosphere than many other famous archaeological sites in Greece.
