Limassol Castle is a medieval fort located in the center of Limassol, Cyprus, next to the Old Port and the historical Old Town pedestrian area.
History
- The first fortress on this site was built by the Byzantines in the 10th–11th centuries.
- At the end of the 12th century, the Crusaders, under Guy de Lusignan, renovated the castle. Legend has it that King Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria here in 1191, giving the castle its alternative name: Richard the Lionheart Castle.
- The original medieval castle did not survive due to numerous wars between the Crusaders, Venetians, Genoese, and Ottoman Turks.
- After Cyprus came under Ottoman control in the 16th century, the current castle was constructed as a fort. Later, it served as the city prison.
Structure
- The castle has a rectangular shape and appears as a large square tower.
- It consists of three floors: one underground and two above ground, with a flat roof accessible to visitors.
- The roof offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Limassol.
Museum and Exhibits
Since 1987 the castle has housed the Cyprus Medieval Museum, showcasing artifacts such as:
- Basement floor: Dishes, tombstones, and historical photographs.
- Ground floor: Cannons, cannonballs, tombstones, and part of the sarcophagus of Adam of Antioch (14th century).
- Second floor: Medieval armor, weapons, coins, and ceramics.
- The roof is free of exhibits but provides a beautiful view of the city.

- For a medieval castle experience in Limassol, visiting this castle is sufficient; Kolossi Castle is farther away and not necessary for a casual visit.
The castle is a compact yet fascinating glimpse into the medieval history of Limassol, with the added bonus of a stunning city panorama from the roof.
