Salzburg weather and the famous Schnürlregen
Salzburg sits right at the northern edge of the Alps, and the mountains catch the clouds: it is one of the wettest cities in Austria, with rain on 15–19 days a month from May to August. Locals even have a word for the steady, string-like drizzle — Schnürlregen. Summers are pleasantly warm at 22–24 °C, while winters are cold, with highs of 3–7 °C and frost on most nights.
When to come
September and early October are often the most settled months, with 15–19 °C and fewer rainy days — ideal for the walk up to Hohensalzburg Fortress and the views over the old town. Summer brings the Salzburg Festival from late July to August and open-air events such as the Electric Love Festival, while Advent fills the Cathedral Square and the Residenzplatz with Christmas markets.
