Bruges climate through the year

Bruges lies only 15 km from the North Sea, and the coast shapes its weather: winters are mild for northern Europe, summers rarely get hot and a breeze is almost always blowing. July and August average 22–23 °C by day and 14–15 °C at night. From November to February highs stay around 7–11 °C, frost is short-lived and about half of the days bring some rain.

When to go

Late spring and early summer are the sweet spot: May and June bring 17–21 °C, around 20 dry days a month, long evenings and boat trips on the canals in good light. September is still warm (20 °C) and calmer after the summer crowds. A winter visit has its own charm when the Markt fills with Christmas stalls, but dress for damp, windy days.

If it rains

Showers on the coast tend to come and go quickly, so a light rain jacket is more useful than an umbrella in the wind. On wet hours, step into the Church of Our Lady, home to Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child, or St. Salvator’s Cathedral, and save the climb up the Belfry for a clearer moment.
