Sofia weather at the foot of Vitosha
Sofia lies on a high plain at about 550 metres, with the Vitosha massif rising right above the city, so its climate is continental, with cold winters and warm summers. July and August reach about 28 °C with comfortable nights around 17 °C, while January days stay near 5 °C and nights fall below freezing. Late spring is the wettest time: May and June bring showers and thunderstorms on 12–14 days.
Summer evenings and autumn colours
July to September is the driest and sunniest period, ideal for strolling along Vitosha Boulevard to the golden domes of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and for hiking on Vitosha, where it is noticeably cooler. September and October, with 18–24 °C, bring autumn colours to the mountain and pleasant days for city walks past Sveta Nedelya Church and the Banya Bashi Mosque.
Winter in the city and on the slopes
In winter, when snow often covers Vitosha, the ski slopes are less than an hour from the centre. On cold or rainy days, the Regional History Museum in the former Central Mineral Baths, the Central Market Hall and an evening at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre are good ways to stay warm.
