Kronborg Castle: Hamlet’s Castle in Helsingør, Denmark

Kronborg Castle stands on a promontory at the northeastern tip of Zealand in the town of Helsingør (Elsinore), Denmark, where the Øresund strait narrows to just a few kilometres from Sweden. It makes an ideal day trip from Copenhagen. The simplest way to get there is the coastal train (Kystbanen) operated by DSB, which runs directly from Copenhagen roughly every 20–30 minutes and takes around 45 minutes; trains also stop at Nørreport and Østerport. A one-way ticket costs around 78 DKK, so a 24-hour all-zones ticket can be better value for a return trip. From Helsingør station it is a scenic 10–15 minute walk along the harbour to the castle, with the fortress in view almost the whole way.

History and Literary Fame

Built in its Renaissance form in the 1570s and 1580s under King Frederik II, Kronborg controlled the lucrative Sound Dues, the toll levied on every ship passing through the strait into the Baltic Sea, which made it one of the most important fortresses in northern Europe. Its worldwide fame, however, comes from literature: it is the “Elsinore” of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet. Highlights include the long ballroom, a collection of 16th-century tapestries, and the atmospheric underground casemates, where the statue of the legendary sleeping hero Holger the Dane is said to wake if Denmark is ever in danger. The castle is part of the National Museum of Denmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tickets and Practical Information

Adult admission is 145 DKK during the peak summer months of June to August and around 95 DKK in the shoulder season, while children and visitors under 18 enter free, as do Copenhagen Card holders. Buying tickets online saves 10 percent, and tickets can also be purchased on arrival. Opening hours vary by season, typically 11:00–16:00 in winter and 10:00–17:00 from April to September, with the last admission 30 minutes before closing. A realistic visit takes at least two hours to cover the grounds, casemates, and interiors. There is a paid car park about a 10-minute walk north of the castle for those arriving by car.
