Château de Chambord, France

The largest château of the Loire Valley, built for Francis I from 1519, with its famous double-helix staircase, a skyline of turrets and Europe’s largest walled forest park.

Château de Chambord, France

The Château de Chambord is the largest château in the Loire Valley and one of the most famous castles in France. It stands in the middle of a vast forest estate about 16 km east of Blois, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Built from 1519 for King Francis I, it is a masterpiece of the French Renaissance, combining the plan of a medieval fortress with Italian classical design. It is known for its spectacular roofline and its double-helix staircase, which is often attributed to Leonardo da Vinci.

History and Significance

Construction began in 1519 under King Francis I, who wanted a hunting lodge that would also display his power and prestige. Francis I spent barely seven weeks there in total, mostly on short hunting trips, and work continued long after his death in 1547; the château was only completed under Louis XIV in the late 17th century. In 1981 Chambord and its estate were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and since 2000 they have also been part of the Loire Valley World Heritage site.

The château has about 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces and more than 80 staircases. Its most remarkable feature is the central double-spiral staircase: two flights wind around each other, so that one person can go up while another comes down without ever meeting. The roof terraces, crowded with turrets, lanterns and chimneys, are often compared to the skyline of a small city.

Architecture

Chambord’s design combines Gothic and Renaissance elements. The symmetrical plan is based on a central keep with four corner towers, set within a larger rectangular enclosure beside the Cosson river. The estate around it covers 5,440 hectares and is surrounded by a 31-kilometre wall, making it the largest enclosed forest park in Europe.

Visiting the Château

Today the Château de Chambord is open almost every day of the year and is one of the most visited sites in the Loire Valley. Guided tours, a HistoPad tablet tour, exhibitions and seasonal events help visitors explore its history and architecture, and the French formal gardens, restored in 2017, are included in the château ticket.

Opening hours:
From late March to late October the château is open daily from 9:00 to 18:00; the rest of the year it closes at 17:00. It is closed on 1 January and 25 December, and on some Mondays in the low season. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.

Admission fees:
Since 2026 the château and gardens ticket costs €21 for residents of the European Economic Area and €31 for other visitors. Entry is free for under-18s and for EEA residents under 26.
