Plage de Pampelonne is the most famous beach near Saint-Tropez, on the French Riviera in the south of France. It actually lies in the neighbouring village of Ramatuelle, a few kilometres south of Saint-Tropez. The beach is about 4.5 kilometres long, with fine golden sand and clear blue water. It became famous in the 1950s, when the film And God Created Woman, with Brigitte Bardot, was made here. Since then it has been a meeting place for celebrities and a symbol of the glamorous Riviera lifestyle.
What to See
Pampelonne is known for its beach clubs, where people come to eat, relax on sunbeds and enjoy music by the sea. Some of them are very famous, such as Club 55. Between the clubs there are also public parts of the beach where you can lie on the sand for free. Behind the beach are dunes, vineyards and pine trees, and parts of the coast are protected as a natural area. The water is good for swimming and water sports. The beach is long, so it is pleasant to walk along the shore.
How to Get There and Practical Information
Pampelonne is about 10 to 15 minutes by car from the centre of Saint-Tropez. There are paid car parks near the beach. In summer there are also buses and shuttle boats. The nearest airports are Nice and Toulon-Hyères, about 1 to 2 hours away. The public parts of the beach are free. Beach clubs are expensive and should be booked in advance in July and August. Traffic on the roads around Saint-Tropez can be very heavy in summer, so arrive early.
