Montmartre is a district in Paris, located on a hill of the same name, which reaches 130 meters above sea level and represents the highest natural point in the city. The area offers views of Paris and is accessible by metro; the nearest stations are Abbesses and Anvers.
The lower part of Montmartre, near the metro stations, contains a flea market with a mixture of commercial and informal stalls. The area can be crowded and is generally less frequented by tourists in the evening. The upper part of the hill presents a different character, with architecture distinct from other parts of Paris.
The easiest way to reach the top is by funicular, which leads directly to the base of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. From there, visitors can explore the historic streets of Montmartre on foot, descending later via the long staircases that connect the upper and lower parts of the hill.
Montmartre consists of two main areas. The first includes Sacré-Cœur and Place du Tertre, a square that features panoramic views of Paris. Place du Tertre hosts a small market offering paintings, ceramics, and souvenirs, and is frequented by street artists who sell paintings and offer caricature portraits. The second area, around the Montmartre Cemetery, is quieter and allows for observation of the district’s historical atmosphere. A small vineyard is also located on the hill, producing wine labeled as Montmartre wine.
The district became a cultural hub in the 19th century when low property prices attracted artists and writers. Notable residents included Renoir, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Modigliani, among others. Montmartre remains a significant cultural and tourist destination in Paris.
At the foot of Montmartre is the Moulin Rouge cabaret, one of the district’s notable landmarks.
