History

The Tuileries Garden was first established in 1564 by Catherine de’ Medici as an Italian-style garden for the new Tuileries Palace, a continuation of the Louvre. In 1664 it was redesigned in the French formal style by the landscape architect André Le Nôtre, who introduced a wide central avenue, straight alleys, and rows of chestnut trees, later complemented by plane trees. The palace itself was burned in 1871 during the Paris Commune and demolished in 1883, so today the garden opens directly onto the Louvre.

Layout

  • From the Louvre side: A large open square with ornamental flower beds.
  • Central area: A large round pond, followed by a shaded wooded area with mature trees.
  • Towards Place de la Concorde: A large octagonal pond; beyond the square lies the Champs-Élysées.
  • Adjacent museums: The Orangerie Museum on the Seine side and the Jeu de Paume gallery on the Rue de Rivoli side.

Art and Sculptures

The garden houses many sculptures, from classical statues to 20th-century works such as the bronzes of Aristide Maillol and contemporary pieces. Works are scattered among trees, bushes, and even ponds, offering visitors a mix of classical and modern artistic experiences.
