Munich climate through the year
Munich sits 520 metres above sea level, close to the Alps, and its weather shows it: winters are colder than in most German cities, with frosty nights of −1 to −3 °C, and summers bring 23–24 °C afternoons with frequent thunderstorms. May and June are actually the wettest months, with rain on 15–16 days, while October is the driest.
Seasons and festivals
Summer is beer-garden season, best enjoyed from June to August. Oktoberfest starts in mid-to-late September and runs into early October, when days are still around 15–19 °C but evenings turn cool — bring a jacket for the walk home. In winter the Christmas markets on Marienplatz and around the old town make the cold more than bearable.
Föhn days and rainy days
Now and then a warm, dry Föhn wind blows down from the Alps, bringing clear air and views of the peaks from the city. On rainy days, the Deutsches Museum, the Pinakotheken art galleries and the Residenz palace offer hours of indoor sightseeing.
