Athens weather under the Attic sun

Athens is one of the sunniest capitals in Europe. July and August bring 33 °C or more in the afternoon, with warm nights around 23 °C and rain on only a couple of days. Winters are mild but changeable: 12–14 °C by day and rain on seven or eight days a month from November to February, and a cold spell can occasionally dust the surrounding hills with snow.

When to climb the Acropolis

April–May and late September to October, with 20–29 °C, are the best months for the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and long walks through Plaka. In summer the marble hilltop has little shade, so arrive at opening time or come in the late afternoon, and carry water and a hat; during heatwaves above 40 °C the site may close at midday.

Sea breezes and museums

In summer the meltemi, a dry northerly wind, often cools the city and the Saronic Gulf, making the beaches of the Athens Riviera a pleasant escape. On rare rainy days, the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum offer hours of ancient treasures under one roof.
