Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, Grindavík, Iceland

Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most famous attractions. It is a large geothermal spa known for its milky-blue, mineral-rich water, set in a dramatic lava field. The water stays at about 37–39°C, making it comfortable to visit all year round, even in winter.

Although it looks completely natural, the Blue Lagoon is partly man-made: it is fed by seawater heated deep underground and used by the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plant. Over time, it has become a unique bathing site and a symbol of modern Icelandic wellness culture.

Location

The Blue Lagoon is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, in southwestern Iceland, near the town of Grindavík. It lies between Reykjavík and Keflavík International Airport, making it an easy stop either at the beginning or end of a trip to Iceland. The surrounding landscape is volcanic, with black lava rocks, steam, and moss creating a striking contrast with the blue water. Since late 2023, a series of eruptions on the nearby Sundhnúkur crater row has closed the lagoon several times for short periods, so check the official website for the current status before you go.

Why it is famous

  • The water contains silica, algae, and minerals that give it its distinctive color. Silica is especially known for its skin-soothing properties, and visitors are often seen applying white silica mud from the lagoon.
  • Bathing in warm water while surrounded by lava fields, steam, and open sky is a key part of the experience. The setting feels both natural and otherworldly.
  • In addition to the main lagoon, the site includes saunas, steam rooms, in-water bars, relaxation areas, and spa treatments, making it one of the most developed geothermal spas in the world.

Entrance tickets

Entry to the Blue Lagoon must be booked in advance for a time slot, and prices change with demand, season and time of day.

  • The Comfort ticket starts from ISK 11,990 (about €85) per adult
  • The Premium ticket costs more and adds extra masks, a bathrobe and a drink of choice
  • Children aged 2 to 13 enter free with an adult; children under 2 are not admitted

The Comfort ticket includes lagoon access, a silica mud mask, a towel, one drink at the in-water bar and use of the changing facilities. Prices can increase during peak travel periods.

How to get there

From Reykjavík
The Blue Lagoon is about 45 minutes by car from Reykjavík. Many visitors use shuttle buses that run regularly between the city and the spa.

From Keflavík International Airport
The lagoon is only 20 minutes by car from the airport, making it a popular stop immediately after arrival or before departure. Shuttle buses also operate on this route.
