Ravenna weather and climate
Ravenna lies near the Adriatic coast on the flat plain of Emilia-Romagna, with hot, humid summers and cool, often foggy winters. July and August reach 30–31 °C, while December and January bring 9–10 °C by day and frosty nights. Rain is moderate, with 6–12 wet days a month; May has the most showers.
Mosaics and the seaside
Spring and September, with 18–26 °C, are the best time to visit the UNESCO-listed early Christian monuments, from the Basilica of San Vitale to the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. In summer, the nearby beaches of Marina di Ravenna and the Mirabilandia amusement park draw families, ideally in the cooler morning hours.
A good city for rainy days
Ravenna is made for wet weather: most of its treasures are indoors. The glittering mosaics of San Vitale, Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and the Neonian Baptistery can be seen in a single day, and Dante’s Tomb is a short walk from the centre.
