The Historic Centre of San Gimignano is located in the Tuscany region of central Italy, in the province of Siena, approximately 56 km south of Florence and about 40 km northwest of Siena. The town stands on a hill overlooking the Val d’Elsa valley and historically developed along the Via Francigena, an important medieval pilgrimage route connecting northern Europe with Rome. Because of its strategic position on this route, San Gimignano became a prosperous trading and stopping point during the Middle Ages. The historic centre preserves the original medieval street layout, fortified walls and stone buildings that dominate the surrounding Tuscan countryside.
The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990 due to its exceptional preservation of medieval architecture and urban structure. San Gimignano is widely known for its unique skyline formed by tall stone towers built between the 11th and 14th centuries by wealthy families as symbols of political power and prestige. At the peak of its prosperity the town had around 72 towers, some reaching about 50 m in height; today 14 of them remain, making the town one of the best-preserved examples of a medieval urban landscape in Europe.
Several important monuments are located within the historic centre. The Piazza della Cisterna, a triangular medieval square surrounded by towers and palaces, is one of the main public spaces of the town. Nearby stands Piazza del Duomo, where visitors can see the Collegiate Church (Duomo) with extensive fresco cycles from the 14th and 15th centuries. Other notable landmarks include the Palazzo Comunale, the historic town hall with an art gallery, and the Torre Grossa, the tallest tower in San Gimignano, which offers panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside. These buildings illustrate the civic, religious and artistic life of a medieval commune.
Today the historic centre is one of the most visited cultural sites in Tuscany. The town can be reached by car or bus from Florence or Siena, typically in about one hour. Travelers arriving by train usually take a train to Poggibonsi and continue by bus for about 20 minutes to San Gimignano. The compact historic centre is largely pedestrian, allowing visitors to explore narrow streets, medieval squares, museums and viewpoints on foot while experiencing an urban landscape that has changed little since the fourteenth century.
