Udine weather between the Alps and the Adriatic
Udine lies on the Friulian plain between the Julian Alps and the Adriatic, and it is one of the rainiest cities in Italy, with roughly 1,400 mm of rain a year. Moist air from the sea meets the mountains here, so showers are possible in every season and summer often brings strong thunderstorms. July afternoons reach about 29 °C, while winter days stay around 8 °C, with frosty nights.
The best seasons in Friuli
Late spring and September are the most pleasant times for strolling through Piazza della Libertà with its Venetian loggias and climbing the castle hill, which offers views of the Alps on clear days. Autumn is grape-harvest time in the nearby Collio and Colli Orientali wine areas, and both the beaches of Lignano and the Alpine valleys are about an hour away.
Tiepolo on a rainy day
When the rain sets in, Udine has plenty to see indoors: the frescoes by Giambattista Tiepolo in the Patriarchal Palace and the Cathedral, and the museums of the castle. A short trip to Cividale del Friuli, with its Lombard temple, is another good option for a cloudy day.
