Weather for a visit to the Vatican

Vatican City shares Rome’s Mediterranean climate, and since most visits involve queuing outdoors, the weather matters more than you might think. Summer brings 32–33 °C in July and August, with strong sun on St. Peter’s Square, while winter days are mild at 12–14 °C and November has the most rain, with showers on about 13 days.

Timing a visit to the museums

November and January to early March are the quietest months for the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, with shorter queues and mild temperatures. In spring and autumn, book an early entry slot: by late morning the lines along the Vatican walls can be long, and in summer the heat on the square peaks in the early afternoon.

Dress code and weather

Shoulders and knees must be covered in St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, so on hot days carry a light scarf or shirt. When it rains, the Vatican Museums offer kilometres of galleries under one roof, and the vast interior of St. Peter’s Basilica is a short walk away across the square.
