Venice weather and acqua alta
Venice has humid summers and cool, misty winters shaped by the lagoon. July and August reach 29 °C with sticky nights around 21 °C, while December and January stay at 8–9 °C by day. May has the most rainy days, about 14, but late autumn brings the acqua alta — high tides that can flood St. Mark’s Square, now often held back by the MOSE barriers.
Quieter months on the canals
April, May, June and September are the most pleasant, with 17–26 °C for exploring the canals on foot or by boat. February brings the Carnival, with masks and costumes in the cold, misty air, and in late May or early June hundreds of rowers join the Vogalonga regatta. In winter the city is quieter, and the light on the lagoon is beautiful on clear days.
Wet days and high water
If acqua alta is forecast, the city sets up raised walkways and shops sell waterproof overshoes. On rainy days, St. Mark’s Basilica with its golden mosaics, the Doge’s Palace and the Gallerie dell’Accademia are the best places to spend a few hours.
