Verona weather and the opera season
Verona has the warm, humid climate typical of northern Italy. Summers are hot, with 29–30 °C in July and August, and winters are cool and often misty, with highs of 8–11 °C. Winter is also the driest time of the year, while May has the most rainy days, about 16, usually as thunderstorms.
Opera nights and lake days
From June to early September the Arena di Verona hosts its famous open-air opera festival, on warm evenings that rarely drop below 21 °C. Spring and September, at 18–24 °C, are the best time for walking the old town, the Ponte Pietra and the Giusti Garden, and for a day at Gardaland on the shore of Lake Garda.
When storms roll in
Summer thunderstorms can interrupt an opera night, so keep an eye on the hourly forecast; performances often resume once the shower has passed. On rainy days, the Castelvecchio Museum, the Basilica of San Zeno and the cathedral are good indoor choices.
