The Zomer Carnaval (Summer Carnival) is one of the largest and most vibrant cultural events in the Netherlands, held annually in Rotterdam. The festival takes place every summer, with the main parade on the last Saturday of July. This event celebrates Caribbean and Latin American cultures, reflecting Rotterdam’s multicultural identity. The city center becomes a lively festival zone filled with music, dance, and colorful costumes. The atmosphere is energetic and festive, attracting both locals and international visitors.
The highlight of the festival is the Street Parade through central Rotterdam, along major streets such as Coolsingel. Participants include dance groups, musicians, and decorated floats representing different countries and cultures. Costumes are elaborate and colorful, inspired by Caribbean carnival traditions, with feathers, sequins, and vibrant designs. In terms of scale, the event is one of the largest of its kind in Europe: the parade features around 25 carnival groups and more than 2,500 dancers and musicians, and overall attendance can reach hundreds of thousands to nearly one million visitors, making it the biggest Caribbean-style carnival in the Netherlands.
