Bergen weather between the mountains and the sea

Bergen is one of the rainiest cities in Europe, with more than 2,000 mm of rain a year and wet weather on 15–21 days in most months. Mild Atlantic air keeps winters gentle for Norway, with 3–5 °C by day and only brief frosts, while summers are cool and fresh at about 18 °C in July and August. The mountains around the city catch the clouds, so sunshine often alternates with showers within the same hour.

The best time for the fjords

April to June is usually the driest and brightest period, with long days, snow still on the peaks and waterfalls at their fullest, ideal for a cruise into the Hardangerfjord or the Sognefjord. July and August are the warmest months, though often showery. On a clear day, ride the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen for the classic view over the harbour and Bryggen.

Life in the rain

Locals say there is no bad weather, only bad clothing, so bring a waterproof jacket and good shoes in any season. The wooden merchants’ houses of Bryggen, the fish market and the KODE art museums make wet days enjoyable, and a cosy café is never far away.
